Skyler White vs. Walter White

About two week ago, Breaking Bad actress Anna Gunn wrote an article in the NY Times. It was her reaction to fan reaction to Skyler White. I’m addicted to BrBa , so I understand the Skyler hate. Yes, she’s annoying. She won’t leave her murdering drug lord husband, she has an aversion to hard earned millions in blood money, and she’s trying to protect her kids. What a bitch. She’s worse than the killers, cartels, DEA, thugs, and drug addicts combined. On a show that pushes the audience to question the nature of Bad and how much we’re willing to overlook- if you hate Skyler, you kinda missed the point. The show thrives in the moral gray area, and Sklyer, like Walt and Jesse, Hank and Marie, Mike and Lydia, cannot be boxed as just an ‘annoying bitch wife’.

Gunn sums it up nicely:

Could it be that they can’t stand a woman who won’t suffer silently or “stand by her man”? That they despise her because she won’t back down or give up? Or because she is, in fact, Walter’s equal?

…At the end of the day, she hasn’t been judged by the same set of standards as Walter.

  1. Spencer Hensel says :

There’s definitely a lot of misplaced hate towards Skyler. Her character is very smart. Fiercely determined. Surprisingly committed to Walt. And she’s not nearly as much of a psychopath as her husband.

Its ironic that TV’s antiheros are pardoned where their wives are despised. Look at Don and Betty from Mad Men. Neither of them are likable, but Don’s deplorable. A total user and misogynist. Yet people love him? It’s a weird double standard.
